privilege as far as being a citizen of the united states to vote and be part of the process. that is all i have to say. host: frank newport, it sounded like from the comments last night by mitt romney that they were really focusing on from here on out approaching voters who had voted for obama in 2008 and looking to lure them to the romney campaign. is there any way that gallup will be checking that attempt? guest: absolutely straight -- absolutely. we track daily. for a republican to win, they have to pull back in some of those voters. if the same scenario happens this year that unfolded in 2008, obama is going to win again. republicans have two goals -- one is to activate the core republican voters and get them to turn out, which is easier for republicans and democrats, because republicans are more likely to vote. they have characteristics like age and education that make them more likely to vote. the second task is to pull down at 7% margin that obama had over mccain, so they have to come in to become a convert some of those people who went for obama to go to romney, or they were going

it is obvious but it is an input of everything we produce in the united states. food prices rise and health care prices rise and transportation costs rise and that's what we are seeing right now. the idea that we are not having inflation in the economy. they have to get out to the store and start buying things. middle class families, half of the budget goes for health care and food and energy and those are all rising in costings. >> the energy costs right now and particularly gasoline. you expect to see a downward turn in the next couple of months. how critical is that going to be? >> it is interesting if you look back in 1980. one of the things jimmie carter lost that election. they saw the gas price food and that contributed to reagan's victory. it couldn't happen at a worst time. i think the prices are going to fall but back to where they were in july. 3.50 or 3.75 but that is expensive to people and twice as expensive as gasoline costs back in barack obama was elected in 2008. and news of the national debt surging this week as the democrats are set to holding the con. >> i don't think the de

level low with the circle around it, that's not going to let it head for the united states or bahamas but turn it out to sea. let me take you through the holiday weekend forecast. we are going to see temperatures pretty mild across much of the country, 80s up to minnesota and still going to be in the 80s and 90 ace through the southeast. it will be cooler where we have clouds and rain from isaac. that's where the clouds and rain will be pushing throughout your sunday. much of the west remains very dry and fire conditions still very dangerous there and still have a couple of big blazes burning. for labor day, we're going to watch wet weather in areas of the east. we're ending our summer season here with warm temperatures. if you're under isaac, you are going to get wet weather. back to you, alex. >> political headlines now, apparent convention bounce from mitt romney in a new poll following the republican gather. a boost among independents for governor romney, 45% rate him favorable compared to 34% before his speech on thursday. 20% find him likeable compared to 16% before the speech.

would do if he were president of the united states. and the president is well known, the idea is to try to scare america into thinking this is a risk. if we watched the whole convention in which mitt romney was very softly telling everyone it was ok that you voted for this guy but he let you down, it's all right to vote for the republican ticket, then i -- my feeling is the president is going to really try to ramp up this idea that no, it's not ok. not because you like me or you don't need to know more about my biography but because of what the country is at stake. >> i think he has to reach out to some of people who supported him four years ago. if everyone votes -- or vast majority of them vote for him again, he will win. he has to rekindle that magic. he's having bill clinton speak the night before wednesday night and that will be endlessly fascinating. who knows? bring an empty chair or something. i will be watching. that will remind people why they liked him in the first place. but forward looking instead backwards. gwen: if bill clinton brings an empty chair and says nothing and k

the president of the united states in that way. let's even take the idea that we are somehow less safe in the world, this kind of discourse that was coming up from condi rice and john mccain. that felt to me the sort of thing that would be policed out of a democratic convention. you're not allowed to show up and say oh, you know, we're much more vulnerable now. we're much less safe than we once were. >> the eastwood presentation, it spoke to the soft birtherism that's been around all week. that barack obama is not one of ours. he just doesn't get it. and the party took on this role as the carrier of the american dream, the carrier of american exceptionalism as though the rest of us are not. and then to say actually he doesn't get it, and implication presuming lots of democrats don't get it. >> i think we're connecting a lot of dots that shouldn't necessarily be connected. >> okay. >> i think clint eastwood very clearly has a history if you look at this man of being one that is civil to people of all different backgrounds. and you know, i just thought that this was an eccentric speech.

class voters about crime in the united states or about the maybe some of the parts much the civil rights movement they didn't like. and then when with ronald reagan would talk about welfare queen, same thing, a coded racial message. so what are the messages this time? well, the most important one is in the ads that the romney campaign is doing on welfare. these ads are inaccurate but making it sound as if president obama wants to, quote, send them a check, just send them a check. welfare recipients. more than half of all of their ad budget is dwoeevoted to thes ads. now, they toned that down at the convention because that so obviously is a racial subtext. they toned that down, but they do have a couple of other things that still will do conjure kind of the same deal, both paul ryan and mitt romney said in their speeches that money was going to be raided from medicare to pay for obamacare. >> i heard that. >> what that's code for is, hey, white senior citizen voter, your money is going to be taken and given to possibly black minority, uninsured, poor people. that plays on their fears that
